World Bank President: भारतीय वंशाचे अजय बंगा (Ajay Banga) हे जागतिक बँकेचे पुढील अध्यक्ष (World Bank President) असणार आहेत. जागतिक बँकेच्या 25 सदस्यीय कार्यकारी मंडळाने बुधवारी (3 मे) अजय बंगा यांची पाच वर्षांच्या कालावधीसाठी अध्यक्ष म्हणून निवड केली आहे. अजय बंगा हे जागतिक बँकेचे प्रमुख होणारे भारतीय-अमेरिकन आणि अमेरिकन शीख समुदायातील पहिले व्यक्ती असतील. येत्या दोन जून रोजी ते आपल्या पदाचा कार्यभार स्वीकारणार आहेत.
अजय बंगा यांच्या नियुक्तीनंतर, जागतिक बँकेने एका निवेदनात म्हटले आहे की, संचालक मंडळ बंगा यांच्यासोबत जागतिक बँक गट विकास प्रक्रियेवर काम करण्यास उत्सुक आहे. एप्रिलमध्ये झालेल्या बैठकीत या विकास प्रक्रियेवर एकमत झाले. याशिवाय, विकसनशील देशांसमोरील कठीण विकास आव्हानांना तोंड देण्यासाठी प्रयत्नांवर एकत्र काम करायचे आहे, असेही जागतिक बँकेच्या निवेदनात म्हटले आहे.

अजय बंगा हे जागतिक बँकेचे विद्यमान अध्यक्ष डेव्हिड मालपास यांच्याकडून पदाची सूत्रे हाती घेतील. बंगा यांना अमेरिकेचे अध्यक्ष जो बायडन यांनी फेब्रुवारीच्या अखेरीस या पदासाठी नामांकन दिले होते. या जागतिक संघटनेचे नेतृत्व करण्यासाठी अजय बंगा हे सर्वात योग्य व्यक्ती असल्याचे बायडन म्हणाले होते. बंगा, मास्टरकार्ड इंक.चे माजी प्रमुख, सध्या जनरल अटलांटिकचे उपाध्यक्ष म्हणून काम करत आहेत.
कोण आहेत अजय बंगा?
अजय बंगा यांचा जन्म भारतात झाला. ते 2007 पासून अमेरिकेचे नागरीक आहेत. बंगा यांनी आयआयएम, अहमदाबाद येथून एमबीए पदवी मिळवण्यापूर्वी दिल्लीतील सेंट स्टीफन कॉलेज येथून अर्थशास्त्रातील पदवी पूर्ण केली. त्यांनी आपल्या कारकिर्दीची सुरुवात भारतात नेस्ले समूहामधून केली. त्यानंतर सिटीग्रुपमध्ये काम केले. 2016 मध्ये भारत सरकारने त्यांना चौथा सर्वोच्च नागरी पुरस्कार पद्मश्री देऊन सन्मानित केले होते.
नामांकनानंतर अनेक देशांचा दौरा
जागतिक बँकेच्या अध्यक्षपदासाठी नामांकन झाल्यापासून बंगा यांनी विविध सरकारांच्या 96 अधिकाऱ्यांची भेट घेतली. सरकारी अधिकारी, उद्योजक, व्यावसायिक आणि सिव्हील सोसायटी यांना भेटण्यासाठी त्यांनी तीन आठवड्यांच्या कालावधीत आठ देशांमध्ये प्रवास केला.
जागतिक बँक आणि आंतरराष्ट्रीय नाणेनिधी (IMF) या जगातील सर्वोच्च वित्तीय संस्थांपैकी एकाचे प्रमुख असलेले ते भारतीय वंशाचे पहिले व्यक्ती आहेत. दुसरे महायुद्ध संपल्यानंतर त्याची स्थापना झाल्यापासून, जागतिक बँकेचे प्रमुख अमेरिकन होते, तर आंतरराष्ट्रीय नाणेनिधीचे नेतृत्व युरोपियन व्यक्तींकडे होते.
